IS THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN SOFTEAM AND IONOS PROVIDING A SOVEREIGN SOLUTION ?
This Newsletter has recently presented this new offer for data hosting : IONOS provides the cloud service, while SOFTEAM provides a “hybrid turnkey solution based on KUBERNETES. A reader has kindly remarked that the SOFTEAM part is highly dependent on AWS : in its technical guide, the company says it connects the nodes of the sovereign cloud to an Amazon EKS cluster, with ‘the EKS control plane hosted on AWS.’ In Kubernetes, the control plane includes the scheduler, the cluster configuration, and the access interface. So … perhaps not so sovereign !
FRONTIER AI: THE US PROVIDERS WILL BE REGULATED… BY THEMSELVES
Further to a meeting with President Trump, all the mainUS AI providers commit to putting robust internal controls in place, working with an independent external auditor to check how they work, and creating a committee within their board of directors to review control and audit results. The text also states that companies should try to prevent their systems from accidentally hacking into or accessing technical systems. So far so good. But in this agreement there is neither a new offense, nor a planned sanction, nor an independent authority with policing power over the signing companies. They agree to build their own control mechanisms, have them checked by third parties they choose, and then report back to their own boards of directors, full stop.
This “one step ahead, two steps back” dance comes a few days after a group of some 20 nations (see the previous copy of the Newsletter) have called for an international regulation of AI, including mandatory security tests before launches and independent evaluation…
