European Quantum Leap: Funding Surges, Executive Moves, and New Cross-Border Alliances

QUANTUM COMPUTING

QUANDELA RECRUITS

Cyrille Dujardin joins Quandela, European leader in photonic quantum computing as COO.

Over the past four years, Cyril helped transform Eutelsat: evolving from a traditional infrastructure operator into a service-driven connectivity player, leading the merger and integration with OneWeb, and building a significant Low Earth Orbit  business from zero in the middle of a profound reshaping of the space industry.

Says Cyril: “Beyond the business achievements, I am particularly proud of the role Eutelsat now plays as a critical operator within Europe’s sovereign connectivity ecosystem, at a time when geopolitical tensions have made resilience, autonomy and strategic infrastructure more important than ever.”

QUANTWARE ORGANIZES ITS GROWTH

QUANTWARE, a Dutch start up which has recently secured a 178 M€ funding (see a former issue of this Newsletter), is recruiting. Ulrich Mans is taking the position of Director of Geopolitics & Government Affairs. Says Ulrich : “Over the past years, I’ve had the privilege to work at the intersection of quantum technology, international collaboration, and innovation policy – building ecosystems and partnerships through my work with QDNL and international stakeholders across Europe, the US, and beyond. One thing has become increasingly clear: the future of deep tech will depend not only on breakthroughs in the lab, but also on how effectively we align technology, industrial strategy and geopolitics. At QuantWare, I look forward to contributing at exactly that intersection – strengthening our engagement with governments and public stakeholders, and helping translate today’s quantum ambitions into long-term industrial leadership in a global market place”.

FRANCE AND CANADA DECIDE TO STRENGTHEN COOPERATION ON QUANTUM TECHS

In parallel with the G7 AI Summit, France and Canada have signed a new agreement to cooperate on Quantum techs, with initiatives regarding joint funding of R&D projects, researcher mobility, academic exchanges, skills development, standard harmonization, and joint reflection on regulatory issues.

EUROPE: THE EUROHPC (High Performance Computing) JOINT UNDERTAKING LAUNCHES FOUR NEW CALLS

Among these:

Large-Scale Photonic Quantum Computing Platform Technologies: Establish a strategic European initiative to develop scalable, modular, and interoperable photonic quantumcomputing platforms

Quantum Machine Learning: Advance research at the intersection of #quantumcomputing and #AI, unlocking new capabilities for data processing, optimisation and modelling.

QUOBLY SPEEDS UP

The Grenoble-based start-up Quobly, a spin-off of the CEA and CNRS specialized in quantum computing, raises 115 million euros in Series A to accelerate the industrialization of its silicon spin qubit technology. Its first quantum computer is expected to be delivered by the end of 2026, before a deployment within physical HPC (High Performance Compute) infrastructures in 2027. QUOBLY, which has a specific technology where the computing capacity is embedded directly into silicon, will also rely on the funding to speed up its international expansion, already started with offices in Singapore, Taïwan and Canada. The investors are BPI France, SEALSQ (a subsidiary of the Swiss Wisekey), ST MicroElectronics, INNO

VACOM and others, with historical shareholders : CEA, CNRS, the QUANTONATION fund and SUPERNOVA Invest.

EUROPEAN QUANTUM COMPANIES HIT NEW SUMMITS IN FUND RAISING AND TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENTS IN QUANTUM MANUFACTURING OR RELATED TECHNOLOGIES.

Oxford Quantum Circuits, a UK start up, announces it has  raised the largest quantum Series C financing globally

Says CEO Gerald Mullally: “This is a coming-of-age moment for British quantum computing. It shows that British companies can play a leading role in a technology that will shape all our futures. Globally, it represents a clear shift in the market from long-term promise to near-term delivery in quantum computing. For OQC, this gives us the capital to scale internationally, advance our technology roadmap, and meet increasing demand from customers seeking secure, scalable access to quantum computing infrastructure.”

And the Danish Quantum Community gets a new partner: 𝗤𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 is a deep tech spin-out from Aarhus University developing chip-scale, tunable mid-infrared laser technology for high precision molecular sensing and secure free-space communication.

𝗤𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 builds on a simple but powerful idea: bring the maturity, scalability and reliability of telecom photonics into the mid-infrared. By leveraging on mature semiconductor processes and standard manufacturing equipment, the company is developing compact laser modules designed for fast, cost efficient volume production.

SPAIN ALSO IN THE QUANTUM RUSH

EuroQCS-Spain, a new analogue quantum computer located in Barcelona Supercomputing Center!, has just been inaugurated.

As part of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU)‘s commitment to deploying advanced quantum computing infrastructure across Europe, this new system will be integrated into #MareNostrum 5, one of Europe’s world-class supercomputers.

As a hybrid classical quantum architecture, EuroQCS-Spain will offer 10 physical qubits, with planned upgrades to enhance coherence time and qubit count

It will be accessible to European researchers, industry, and public users for advancements in fields like Quantum machine learning, AI model training, finance, logistics optimization challenges and more.

ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE OCEAN: MICROSOFT ANNOUNCES A QUANTUM COMPUTER FOR 2029 INSTEAD OF 2033

Microsoft has issued a new quantum chip, MAJORANA 2, which stabilizes quantum states 1000 times longer than the previous ones. Which slashes the delay before a real quantum computer will run, says the company.

AI AND CHAT BOTS

FRANCE: GOVERNMENT TRIES TO CLARIFY THE USE OF CHATBOTS BY ADMINISTRATIONS

Finally, only two applications should remain. One developed by DINUM (Digital Public Directorate) in partnership with MISTRAL AI, and the other, named GeniAI, coming from the Defense Ministry, for highly confidential communication. The objective is to reduce Shadow Ai and the dispersion of pilots and half adopted applications.
